Two years ago, the neighborhood grocery store, Ray’s Foods, closed their doors. A mystery corporation purchased the property and wouldn’t renew their lease. The supermarket was across the street from a long abandoned five & dime store, McGregors, leaving us one block away from two ugly abandoned storefronts. It has been a bummer. Shortly after Ray’s closed it was disclosed that Safeway, tired of occupying property that flooded on 101 at least every other year, was behind the purchase and also working with the city to purchase the McGregors property as well. We were jazzed about this but roadblock after roadblock of everything from hazardous materials – fire route obstructions to concerns about widening roadways from ODOT – made the Safeway Marketplace I was envisioning seem like a pipe dream.

This week the demolition is finally beginning and the word is we will have our store by spring time. Complete with deli and prepared foods, a Starbucks and all the accoutrements just like the big city. Woo hoo!!
