Chuck and I were explaining to the kids tonight at dinner what a debate is, since they overheard us discussing the presidential debate held last night*. The family took turns taking one side or the other of various topics: Should we have a dog? Bath or Shower? Treats after dinner? etc.

Chuck and Charlie debated the dog topic - we put Charlie in the uncomfortable position of arguing that we shouldn't have a dog, as a way to illustrate that sometimes in debate you are assigned a side that you don't agree with.

In the end, to Samantha (the judge of this particular round - and actually all rounds she didn't participate in since she is so fond of being in charge)- Chuck was more persuasive, arguing that a dog can help protect a family from intruders.

"Papa wins immunity!" she proclaimed.

I think we have been letting her watch too much Survivor Vanuatu.

Charlie piped in at this point, "The rest of you are fair game."

I'm not sure our lesson in politics stuck. But they are in the bathtub right now (the bath side won) debating the merits of arguing.

*John Kerry nailed it, by the way. Go John go. Bring complete sentences back to the White House.
